JILL WEISBERG
SHE COMES FIRST JULY 9, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Butter Gallery presents She Comes First; a site specific installation by Jill Weisberg. Using large format black and white reproductions of vintage adult magazines as a starting point, the recent work of Jill Weisberg explores the idea of shifting context by the means of visual distortion.
By painting over certain elements of the appropriated photography, she invites the viewer to re-interpret the true meaning of the original image. The bold silhouettes of what was once there become fields of color, while leaving hints of the original magazine page to act as clues of what is beneath.
Please join us on Saturday July 9, 2016 for the opening reception of She Comes First by Jill Weisberg from 7-11 PM. Also available for viewing at the gallery is Tatyana Fazlalizadeh’s permanent installation of her Stop Telling Women to Smile street art campaign and recent drawings by Filio Galvez at the adjacent Gesamtkunstwerk Projektraum.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jill Weisberg Having shown across the United States, Jill C. Weisberg’s work creates thought-provoking fine art and murals with a feminist edge. A background both in graphic design and fine art has influenced her to create work that uses both parts of her experience in those fields. Artists like Barbara Kruger and John Baldessari have made an impression on how she views the cross-pollination of fine art and design. Both artists integrate type and images to evoke a strong emotional response when their work is viewed, which is the same goal Weisberg’s artwork achieves.
